RE: Hit by tire debris!

Hi.. You were lucky you got hit with a piece of a flying tire and it left a black mark... We got hit with a whole flying tire and our Motorhome was a write-off
Yikes! That's scary...and bad! Sorry to hear about that...guess we were lucky. It just flew up out of nowhere. And it happened so quickly and among traffic as someone was passing us. At first my husband thought it was a rock, but I said it was way too big.
We have Diamond Shield on the front...now I remember the name once someone mentioned it. So I will make sure not to use anything abrassive...and duh! :S good idea to see what the product itself suggests...but I REALLY appreciate all the suggestions...you never know and I always like to hear what people have actually used and have been successful with.
Those road gators do appear without warning, so I guess we all need to be careful out there!
Thanks again for the suggestions!!!
I saw a MH in for repairs after a lightning strike just ahead of her while it was traveling down the E-way. It blew a big chunk out of the pavement and bounced it into the passenger side of the windshield. Fortunately no one was hurt.

RE: The Perfect Storm-Check Your Hitch Bolts!

One time I had a hitch installed I thought the subframe on the MH looked a little flimsy, and had planned to hook up the horse trailer, empty of course, and drive the 10 miles to get the subframe beefed up for hauling the trailer. When I got to the guy that did the welding the rear bumper of the motorhome was nearly dragging on the ground. Found out the receiver was only rated for 1000 pounds instead of the 10000 it was supposed to be.
Recently, I had to tighten up the ball on the hitch, the nut had backed off about half way.
Bottom line check everything everytime.

RE: What do use to check your tire pressure?

As a diabetic this reminds me of the conversation we had about the accuracy of diabetic blood glucose meters. By federal standards a diabetic blood glucose meter only needs to be 80% accurate. This alone can be it's own problem. But if you want lab results then go to the lab. If you want a general indication of daily trends, which is how we use blood glucose meters and tire gauges, then any gauge that is consistent in it's reading is all you need.
If I needed to inflate my tires to say 80 pounds, and the meter read 80 when I actually had 75, as long as it is consistent for all the tires. That is if it reads high or low, as long as it reads the same, consistently high or low for each tire.

RE: Involuntary fulltiming surges, limit RV parking.

RV street parking PLEASE!!! I cannot even park mine in my house for more than a few days before the neighbors start calling the village and accuse me of "storing" my RV in the driveway! It is a shame as many of our local RV parks limit the amount of time you can stay (five day max) so for us it is not even an option to put it on the street. I would like to tell the village to pound sand but our neighborhood adopted some stupid rules (that are not enforced equally) about parking things other than cars on property. The shed building rule appears to get ignored but park a boat in your driveway and just wait for the village to crawl up your privates!
When I read these, I am glad I bought 10.1 acres in the boonies. I can park anything here as long as they have current plates. I can also raise an antenna tower without my neighbor's permission. I am still close enough to get to the stores I need.

RE: Finding a simple hinge.

Thanks for all the input up to now, except for the fact that piano hinges have the holes across from each other (at least the ones I'm finding.) This will then cause the pop rivet heads to touch causing the hinge not to close fully.
Unless what everyone is telling me is that they make a piano hinge with offset holes, which I seem not to be able to find.
Some times I have seen small hinges with 4 holes in each side, you could use the alternating holes. That is if you can't find the hinges you are looking for.

RE: RV Friendly/unfriendly Gas Stations

I have been asked to move after I pulled in for gas. Usually I reply, no problem and move to the next station. I wonder how their boss would feel losing a $300.00 sale?
I have also been at smaller stations where people would cut in front of my rig while I was waiting to get manuvered up to a pump. Wife actually had to run interference for me. Which was better than for me get into a fist fight.

RE: This upsets me :(

I just drove by the WalMart in our hometown and saw a disturbing sight.
A Fleetwood Expedition, complete with attached toad, was parked cross-ways over at least 7 spaces in the front lot of the store. As if that was not rude enough, to take all those spots up front, the jacks were down and all 3 slides were extended.
I worry people like this will jeopardize the relationship Rvers share with WalMart.
Any Comments?
Depends how long their combined rig is. I could park mine so that I only took up 3 spaces but then I would also block an aisle. I usually take up far more when I park my 50 ft across the spaces but I don't block the aisles. I also park closest to the street where there are a lot of empty spaces.

RE: SAMS CLUB GAS

My son has a client that works for the state of FL as an inspector and the Murphy stations that are at the Sams locations sell the poorest quality fuels in his area. It still meets state requirements however but has more particulates so you may have a shorter fuel filter life. You will also find a lot of stations are going to 10% ethanol in their gas.
Since most gasoline is shipped by pipeline from the refiners to the terminals where it is then distributed by truck to the station. The only difference between company A's gas compared to company B's is the detergents and other additives that they add at their end of the pipeline.
Murphy at Walmart is usually the cheapest around here but put it on a Walmart gift card and they take off an additional 3 cents per gallon off the sign price.
However most Marathon stations also have a gift card and they take of 2%, it used to be 4% but they lowered it. At over 3 dollars a gallon that means you save more than 6 cents per gallon.
Where they make their money is when you leave a balance on the card they earn interest.

RE: Class A sales down 54%

.RV Industry Ass'n reports sales from last 12 months down:
Class A.....54%
Class C.....56%
TT's........27%
This can surly explain why companies are failing.
The RV industry and the Auto industry are both cyclical in nature. Also add the rising cost of fuel, and both as they are now, can become depressed in the sales department.
The fact that RV manufacturers are closing there doors is due largely to the lack of planning for those lean times

RE: E-Z Pass in your MH

I have EZ Pass for my cars through the PA Turnpike Commission. They require a reasonable deposit for each tag. I attempted to get one for the motorhome and they wanted to treat it like a commercial vehicle. The deposit was $500!!! I now get a ticket and pay cash. If towing, I usually remove the tag.
One time I forgot to remove the tag from the toad. When I got to the booth, it was smart enough to read the motorhome and the toad. I may attempt to try this again in the future by letting the toad's tag pay the toll for both vehicles.
There is a toll road near Toronto, Canada that has a toll road with no toll booths. It just takes a photo of your license plate and send a bill in the mail. My S-I-L has never had to pay, because his trailer plate is inside the rear window.

RE: Country Coach Failure

Try to get the auto manufacturer to solve your problem when the car is 5 years old.
Any new GM car or truck has a limited powertrain warranty good for 5 years 100k miles.

RE: Just saw an unhappy camper...

There's no lemon law for RV's, anything could be his problem. My brother had a Ford Bronco that kept having the rear window pop out. This happened at least a dozen times, smashing in the road. Each time he brought it back the dealer would try again to fix it. After 3 years and a dozen windows, he finally filed for a lemon law claim and got the truck replaced. His next Bronco was perfect. What a pain in the butt!
Some vehicles are just junk, regardless of make, model or cost. Even the best manufactures can have a bad day.
Each state has its own lemon laws, and the federal government has the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.

RE: Smaller Class A sleeping 4 adults.

I’m researching RV’s and am considering both a Class A and Class C. Two main requirements I have are to keep the length to 32 feet or less (less is better) and to be able to sleep 4 adults comfortably. With the Class C the cab over bunks are large enough for two adults, although I guess climbing up and down is not much fun.
My question is are there any Class A models 32 feet or less that will sleep 4 adults comfortably. I’ve seen some dinettes and sofas that convert to beds that would work for kids, but are too short or narrow for two adults.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
Ken
My F-I-L has a 19 foot Winnebago class A, that will sleep 6. It is on a Dodge Chassis with a 318 engine. Of course it is 33 years old, and still original interior. The paint is worn thin in some areas from The turtle waxing it got every year.

RE: leveling jacks vs. leggos

leave the bathroom door about 1/2 way open. When it stays open you're very close to level
The MH could lay on its side and if I opened the bathroom door it would stay where I put it. That is an exaggeration of course, but the hinges on the bathroom door are stiff.

RE: leveling jacks vs. leggos

My HWH levelers move in pairs; 2 front or 2 right or two left or 2 rear. If you have air ride, dump the air first, then level front to back, and then side to side. I bought one of those leveling gadgets from RV Innovations and it works great. CW sells them now for about $45.00.
Also, leave the bathroom door about 1/2 way open. When it stays open you're very close to level.
Usually the Legos will get crushed by the weight of the m/h. A piece of plywood works good or cutting boards from WM.
I had a 2x10 plank that I used for ramping and leveling my old A that didn't have levelers. I cut it into 10 inch squares and was using them for landing pads beneath the levelers until they started to break one at a time. Now I use nothing under the levelers feet.

RE: Interstate or State Roads

I avoid all the interstates I can. I don't like the continuous string of traffic going around me. As long as the road is paved I'll drive on it.
That doesn't bother me, as long as I am in the right lane. What I have a problem with are those that are getting on and stay right along side of me expecting me to merge left when I am blocked by the traffic going around me, when all they have to do is speed up and get ahead of me.
Statistically there are more accidents on the 2 and 4 lane county and state roads. Sometimes county and state roads are the most direct way for me to travel. As an example, here in Michigan there is M-57, I live close to the east end of it and sometimes it is the best way to travel to the west side of the state.

RE: Battery Problem, engine won't turn

Thank you for your quick responses! The battery itself is only a year old. I will do the checks you suggested and give a report. THANKS!
Depending on the age of the coach, if the battery and altenator check out ok, one thing overlooked is the cables to the battery they do go bad over time. If the resistance is high the cables will deliver a reduced voltage at the starter and you will not be able to start your vehicle have a resistance check of the cables.
